Democratic lawmakers Condemn Trump After He States They Should Face Capital Punishment
Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated outrage after Donald Trump alleged a group of Democratic legislators of being "betrayers" and declared they should be detained and penalized "through capital punishment" following their publication of a disputed video.
The Content That Triggered the Dispute
The clip, published on Tuesday, includes six Democratic elected officials who formerly acted in armed forces or intelligence positions.
"Similar to us, you all made an pledge to defend and support this national charter," the representatives stated in the 90-second video. "At present, the risks to our constitution aren't just from overseas, but from domestically. Our laws are explicit, you can reject improper directives, you can reject improper directives, you have to decline improper directives. No one has to carry out commands that break the legal system or our founding principles."
Trump's Incensed Reaction
The clip appeared to trigger a angry reaction from the previous commander-in-chief.
On Thursday morning, Trump wrote on his social media platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional publication, he stated: "This constitutes really serious, and Harmful to our Nation. Their words cannot be permitted to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent publication, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also shared a comment that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Leaders Answer
Following Trump's comments on Thursday, Democratic leadership issued a joint declaration censuring the remarks.
"Political violence has no place in the United States," they stated. "Elected officials who appeared in the video all worked our country with tremendous national pride and distinction. We unequivocally denounce Donald Trump's appalling and risky death threats against members of Congress, and urge Republican lawmakers to forcefully do the same."
The opposition officials also stated that they had been in touch with law enforcement "to make certain the safety of these members and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must without delay delete these unhinged digital publications and recant his aggressive discourse before he causes harm," the statement continued.
Representatives' Firm Response
The representatives who appeared in the video also released a response.
"We are former service members and security experts who value this United States and took an vow to protect and uphold the founding document of the United States," they stated. "That oath continues forever, and we aim to keep it. No threat, coercion, or promotion of aggression will stop us from that important responsibility."
"The most revealing aspect is that the former president deems it liable to punishment by capital punishment for us to reiterate the legal requirements," they continued. "Our service members should understand that we have their protection as they carry out their vow to the founding principles and responsibility to obey only proper directives. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our obligation."
They continued: "All citizens must unite and denounce the former president's requests for our death and partisan aggression. This is a period for ethical certainty."
Additional Partisan Comments
The Senate Democratic leader also condemned Trump's remarks and posted on online networks: "Let's be crystal clear: the former president is demanding the capital punishment of government members."
He added: "This represents an clear THREAT. Each congressional member, every Representative, all citizens – irrespective of political affiliation – should censure this immediately and without qualification."
The Conservative official supported Trump's allegation that the Democrats had been involved in "treason", describing the video as "highly unsuitable", commenting: "This represents very risky, you have prominent officials of the legislature telling military personnel to disobey orders, I think that represents unprecedented in US history."
The Republican leader also allegedly stated to the press that in what he read of Trump's messages, Trump was "explaining the violation of treason" but that "legal experts have to analyze the language and establish all that."
Executive Branch Reaction
During a White House press conference on that day, when inquired by a media member, "Would the president want to put to death congressional representatives?", the executive branch representative answered: "Absolutely not."
"Let's be clear about what the ex-commander in chief is responding to," the spokesperson declared. "We see sitting members of the US Congress who worked together to orchestrate a digital communication to members of the American armed forces, to serving soldiers urging them to disobey the commander in chief's legal commands."
She added: "The sanctity of our defense system depends on the command structure, and if that chain of command is violated, it can cause fatalities, it can result in confusion, and that's what these elected officials ... are fundamentally promoting."
