Here's a dare for partners in committed relationships who appreciate the horror genre: Get comfortable with your loved one and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its online premiere on the Hulu service. On the surface, it may seem like standard physical horror, but within Together lies a profound contemplation about how we choose to love our partners.
A Directorial Debut Exploring Partnership Complexities
Together marks the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for over ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the actors bring a particular energy to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a enduring union.
The narrative starts when Tim and Millie relocate from the big city to the rural area for Millie’s job. A familiar narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the conventions cease. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.
An Otherworldly Trigger
While walking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim tumble into an underground cave. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a strange force begins influencing the pair. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.
The entire film is a slow burn of scares, interspersing moments of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and presents them in a consistently growing aura of dread.
Layered Performances
A great deal of Together is only the two lead actors, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.
Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and far away from his support system. He fears the concept of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is intensified by the fact he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for transportation.
The director's cleverest decision in this movie never makes either of his characters the definite antagonist.
Tim and Millie grapple with the type of challenges that are inherent in long-term unions a decade in. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their relationship.
Allegory and Meaning
While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor does not come across as hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Conversely, some couples having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could act as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the finale sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your significant other and say, “I’d do that for you”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can experience at this very moment.
Together is streaming on Hulu's platform now.
