Hong Kong's LegCo operates as a mini parliament with the authority to create and amend legislation for the region. Yet, electoral processes for this assembly have experienced a significant decline in genuine political alternatives amid sweeping governance transformations in recent years.
After the 1997 handover, a principle of "one nation, two systems" was put in place, pledging that Hong Kong would retain a measure of self-governance. In the years since, critics contend that civil liberties have been systematically curtailed.
Key Events and Changes
During 2014, a bill was put forward that was designed to allow residents to choose the Chief Executive. Notably, this process was limited to candidates vetted by central authorities.
The year 2019 experienced widespread unrest, culminating in an episode where residents accessed the government building to express anger against a contentious legal amendment.
The Consequence of the NSL
Enacted in mid-2020, the NSL handed new legal tools to Beijing over Hong Kong's affairs. Activities such as secession were outlawed. Following this law, the primary opposition organization ceased operations.
The Present Electoral Framework
The council polls are considered Hong Kong's primary political process. However, laws introduced in recent years now ensure that only individuals deemed loyal are eligible to run for office.

Voter Behavior
